The Brodie helmet is a steel combat helmet designed and patented in London in 1915 by John Leopold Brodie It was also known as the Tommy helmet, tin pan hat or the battle bowler (when worn by officers). By the end of the war some 7.5 million Brodie helmets had been produced for UK and US forces.

This commemorative pencil is topped by a Tommy Helmet made from pewter. The pencil has a silhouette of a battle scene and the words 'World War I 1914-1918' printed on it.
