When you buy from us, whether in our online shop or our shop in Kew, you are helping to support The National Archives and its mission to preserve 1000 years of British history.

The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday between 10am & 5pm. The shop is closed Sundays, Mondays and on public holidays. More details on opening times across The National Archives can be found here

We accept all major credit cards and debit cards except Diners Card. Credit or debit card payments will be charged once your order is placed and you receive an email confirmation. The price shown for the goods is in pounds sterling (GBP £), includes VAT but excludes postage and packing. The charges for postage and packing are shown in the checkout screen once you have entered your chosen method of delivery prior to confirming your order. All items are offered subject to availability at the time of ordering.

International Orders: We’re sorry that we can’t deduct VAT when charging for goods either online or in store. All transactions are taken in pounds sterling (GBP £). If your credit card is in any other currency, the rate of exchange will be that of your card issuer and you may be charged an international fee by them.

We are unable to take any orders over the telephone. Please add any items you wish to purchase to your online shopping bag and follow the instructions to pay online via checkout.

We realise how important it is to securely store any information that you provide. The National Archives maintains the highest levels of security. Our site uses high-level SSL encryption technology, the most advanced security software currently available for online transactions. We take the privacy and security of your payment and personal details very seriously.

No, you can make a purchase as a guest without creating an account. However, by registering for an account with us you will have access to additional benefits, such as viewing your order history and saving address details. The National Archives' Shop operates separately to other National Archives' services such as Discovery (including Digital Downloads) and readers' tickets. You will need to create a separate account and sign in separately via the online shop if you wish to access additional benefits.

We send an automated email confirmation when you have successfully placed your order. For orders being sent within the UK we also send an automated email to confirm despatch. If you do not receive these emails check your Junk email folder as they may be filtered here by your device's security settings.

On the product page, enter your email address in the ‘product out of stock subscription’ box, and click to be notified when the product is back in stock. Alternatively, email us at bookshop@nationalarchives.gov.uk and we can tell you if the item is due to come back into stock, when delivery is expected, or if the item has been discontinued.

Not all of the products we stock in our shop are available on our website. However, if you have seen something you would like to order, please email us and we can let you know if it’s available to purchase. We are sorry, but certain items are available for collection only.

We will email you to ask if you would like the available items sent out immediately, or wait for all items to be dispatched together. We will try to give you an expected date for any out of stock items. If your items are not shipped together because an item is out of stock, you will not pay any additional delivery charges.

Your discount code for 20% off online purchases can be found in your newsletter updates from the Friends. The code can be used by entering it in the discount code box at checkout. Every care has been taken to ensure accuracy of description, specifications, colour and price of all products; however there may be occasional errors or discrepancies. All items are offered subject to availability.

Prices may differ between our on site shop in Kew and our online store. Sales and offers may also differ between our on site shop in Kew and our online store. We reserve the right not to offer the same pricing.

We are committed to preserving your privacy. Any information we collect about you will only be used lawfully in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. At no time will The National Archives pass information onto third parties, unless you give us prior permission. When you register you will be given the option of being placed on a mailing list to receive further information about The National Archives including regular news, updates and priority booking for events, as well as promotional offers for the shop. 

Deliveries outside the UK may be subject to import duties, taxes and delivery charges. These may vary by destination, and The National Archives Shop is not responsible for these charges or for any correspondence between you and your country's customs authorities.

Many countries prohibit import of common items (including books, glassware, ceramics and jewellery) available to purchase on our website, and we cannot provide an exhaustive list here. If you are in doubt about whether your country will allow the import of a particular item, please check here before ordering.If you order any item prohibited for import to your country, it may be returned to us or destroyed by local customs officials. In this instance we will be unable to offer a refund but do contact us to see if we can assist.

Refunds will be issued via the original payment method. This includes e-gift voucher purchases, which will be credited onto a new e-gift voucher. 

Yes. You can redeem another e-gift voucher during checkout.

When the recipient redeems an e-gift voucher, the checkout displays one of the following options:

If the balance available on the e-gift voucher is greater than or equal to the order total, you will be prompted to complete order. 

If the balance available on the e-gift voucher is less than the order total, you will be prompted to choose a second payment method for the remaining balance before placing the order.

E-gift voucher codes are unique to each one purchased.

Unfortunately they can not be re-issued, so make sure the recipient keeps them safe in order to use them.

DELIVERY

We offer free standard UK delivery on all orders over £50.

Orders up to £30 are charged a flat fee of £4.95

Orders between £30.01 and £50 are charged a flat fee of £6.95.

Usual UK delivery timescale (excluding custom prints) is between 5 and 7 working days from the date of dispatch. Please allow up to 14 working days for delivery. For custom print delivery pricing and timescales see below. These timescales may vary especially when we have online sales and in the weeks before Christmas. Christmas 2024: The last recommended order date for UK orders is 14 December. The last recommended order date for all international orders is 23 November.

Custom Prints

Your prints and frames will be handmade by King & McGaw at their Sussex workshop.

Unframed orders are shipped within 5 working days (normally shipped next day).

Framed orders are shipped within 20 working days.

RETURNS

If you are not completely satisfied with your item you may return it within 28 days for a refund.

Unfortunately we cannot offer a refund on custom prints unless they are faulty or we have made a mistake. Custom prints are exempt as they are made to order.
