The first part of the book begins with the story of how childbirth was conducted in the 17th and 18th centuries at a time of political and religious upheaval in England. Part two is based on the Midwives Nominations of Yorkshire from 1662-1732, during which time midwives applied to the diocesan authorities for a licence to practice their art. Includes over 2,000 names of midwives, childbearing women, medical men and ministers of religion.
