Nieuport is a famous name in World War One history and one of the well-known Michelin Guides of the immediate post-war years dealt with this area of the Belgian coast. There was to have been an amphibious raid to coincide with Third Ypres in which troops were to go ashore at Westende-Plage.
This 1:10,000 scale map shows in tremendous detail the defences which would have confronted them. It is based on an Ordnance Survey sheet of August 1917 and contains many fascinating features. Note the flooded areas. Note, too, the numerous ‘Screens’ throughout the area.
