Description
Domesday Book is one of the most famous documents in English history. Now available in one volume, here is the complete, authoritative translation from the original Latin. The detailed picture of the English landscape it offers has no equal in any country, while it is valuable not only in the picture it allows local historians to construct of their area in the eleventh century but also as the foundation document of The National Archives.

The text reproduced here is that of the Alecto Historical Editions translation of both Great and Little Domesday. The Alecto translation of Great Domesday, while based on the Victoria Histories of the Counties of England translation, is a much overhauled and improved version - inconsistencies have been removed, the treatment of names standardized and out-of-date words replaced. New texts were commissioned for the Little Domesday counties.

There is a Glossary of Terms used in this translation at the end of the book and the Index of Places shows the modern name, the contemporary name, the county and the page number in this edition.
