An overview of a nineteenth century funeral director's business based in Ealing from a time when funeral directing was not the sole activity of those in the profession. In this book the Undertaking Trade and the Burial of the Poor is looked at between 1650 and 1830.

The original business ledgers of one family business, the Grover family, are held at the London Metropolitan Archives, City of London and have been examined to show how and where this business developed and operated during the nineteenth century. It also shows not only the funeral work which was undertaken by the family business, but it also looks at other work, carried out by the business in the local community. An analysis is made of the class of people using the business and the appendices record names and the work that they had carried out. Although the Undertaking Trade during this period was predominantly male, this book is a rare example of women also being involved in the funeral business.
