The bloody, devastating civil wars set family against family, friend against friend. At the head of this disintegrating kingdom was Charles I. His rule would change the face of the monarchy for ever. Charles I's reign is one of the most dramatic in history, yet Charles the man remains elusive. Too often he is recalled as weak and stupid, his wife, Henrietta Maria, as spoilt and silly: the cause of his ruin.

In this portrait, informed by newly disclosed manuscripts, including letters between the king and his queen, Leanda de Lisle uncovers a Charles I who was principled and brave, but also fatally blinkered. This is a tragic story for our times, of populist politicians and religious war, of a new media and the reshaping of nations, in which women vied with men for power. For Charles it ended on the scaffold. Condemned as a traitor and murderer, he was also heralded as a martyr: his reign destined to sow the seeds of democracy across Britain and the New World.

1000 piece jigsaw based on the legal document KB 8/9 m.17 held in the collection of The National Archives. It is the commission to Anne’s uncle, Thomas Howard, duke of Norfolk, Treasurer and Earl Marshal of England to sit as High Steward of England. His responsibilities in that legal office were to ensure that Henry VIII’s view of justice as ‘a most excellent virtue’ was carried out in the proceedings of the trial.

Norfolk was to receive the indictments against Anne and George at a special court and call them before him to answer the charges. He was required to assemble the nobles and lords of the kingdom, as peers of the queen, to form a jury and give a verdict and sentence according to the law.

This commission is a letter patent – an open document with the Great Seal of England attached, written as public proof of a major grant or appointment. Appealing to a range of audiences, it covers more than 650 years of momentous history through the use of both famous and lesser known events which shaped Britain. Using original documents and detailed research undertaken by The National Archives' record specialists, it covers moments in history which led to fundamental changes in eras.

It includes unique discoveries from the archives, uncovering mysteries and stories of how dealing with treason have brought about the changes which have influenced and shaped Britain throughout the centuries. Among these are: the trial and execution of Anne Boleyn on the orders of her husband, Henry VIII several major acts of sedition, including the Gunpowder Plot and the revolution plotted in the Cato Street conspiracy, the evidence brought against Sir Roger Casement, executed at Pentonville and his remains later exhumed and given a state funeral in Ireland, the trial and execution of the William Joyce who, as 'Lord Haw-Haw', broadcast Nazi propaganda from Berlin during the Second World War. The book covers many stories that explore the nature of treason and how the crown and state reacted to it - from the introduction of the Treason Act in 1352 right through to the twentieth century. Written by experts from among the historians at The National Archives, the book is copiously illustrated with images from our unrivalled collections.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0364/6285/4275/collections/Xmas_header_2022_ba35153c-b03f-4765-8e38-031a6e7660a0.jpg?v=1667492165
