WO 153\/167 VIII Corps Dispositions 1 July 1916, shows where each British Army Division which made up VIII Corp was at 07:30 am on the 1st of July, 1916 and where each of the battalions of infantry were when battle commenced. Perhaps the most shocking thing about this particular trench map is what it shows of the plans for 1 July, 1916 and with knowledge of the battle in hindsight, what horror it actually does not record. On the right hand side of the map are markings showing where the infantry was expected to arrive at various times after 07:30 am. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the centre of the map, the position of 86th Infantry Brigade, including the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers is marked. To the right of where the Lancashire Fusiliers are on the map, is Sunken Lane, which although not actually named on the map, is from where the battalion launched their attack towards Beaumont Hamel. The battalion was filmed here just prior to their attack by Geoffrey Malins and they feature in his film of the Somme. Also featured in the film, is the blowing up of Hawthorn Ridge Redoubt. Propaganda encouraged the public to change their eating habits and in 1940 rationing was introduced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFruit and vegetables were never rationed despite many varieties being in short supply as enemy blockades of shipping lines made it increasingly difficult to transport food to Britain. The solution was to ask the country to “Dig for Victory”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis campaign by the government was simple yet effective. Posters and leaflets encouraged families to grow their own food, and public spaces such as parks were turned into allotments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe aim wasn’t just to get people growing; the government wanted to ensure a successful crop. Posters like this one were produced to advise novice gardeners on crop rotation and planting schemes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn closer inspection some details jump out, firstly the size of the plot – this plan is for a space 90 x 30 feet (or roughly 27 x 9 metres). For many this would have been a large plot to maintain, and likely bigger than their gardens. Helpfully the government also produced leaflets on how to plant smaller plots; these were often marketed towards women and children. The units of measurement are also interesting. The plan is for an area equivalent to 10 squared rods, poles or perches. These units are no longer used today, aside from when talking about allotments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe can also see from the very bottom that this poster was part of a set of resources that would-be gardeners could obtain from the government. The campaign offered the public a high level of support and encouragement to grow their own fruit and vegetables, which ultimately paid off. It is the commission to Anne’s uncle, Thomas Howard, duke of Norfolk, Treasurer and Earl Marshal of England to sit as High Steward of England. His responsibilities in that legal office were to ensure that Henry VIII’s view of justice as ‘a most excellent virtue’ was carried out in the proceedings of the trial.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNorfolk was to receive the indictments against Anne and George at a special court and call them before him to answer the charges. He was required to assemble the nobles and lords of the kingdom, as peers of the queen, to form a jury and give a verdict and sentence according to the law.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e This commission is a letter patent – an open document with the Great Seal of England attached, written as public proof of a major grant or appointment.
